The Calling of St. Matthew | Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, 1599-1600

We are a volunteer non-profit that has worked over the past years to restore Holy Cross Cemetery and its historic Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel. We have recently expanded our mission with research and education.

Please join us in the restoration, either as a volunteer or as a donor. Both are needed in this important and necessary effort to preserve an important historic place for the people of Halifax and for all people of Irish Catholic descent.

Become a Restoration Volunteer
Consider volunteering your labour for restoration once a month on Saturday mornings from 8:30am to 12:30pm, during the May to October period. We’ll find you a job that fits your energy and fitness levels, your talents and interests. We supply everything, including gloves, tools and refreshments, so all you need to do is show up in your work clothes, and speak to Don Reardon. Contact us now for the schedule, or if you need a drive.

Become a Database Volunteer
We have digitized the burial records for the cemetery, and are now adding census information, and birth and marriage records datasets to these records. Join us as a database warrior, working from the “comfort of your own home”. Contact us now about how to get training and join the corps.

Become a Donor
Don’t have time or strength to be a volunteer, but can help financially. We are a group of volunteers, and are so tight that we still make change with pennies. Every dollar counts, and you gain recognition for your generosity. Target your money on a specific project which can be named after you or your loved ones. Contact us about how to do that.

Give Us Comments and Feedback
Let us know what we’re doing right or wrong. Tell us about an experience you had at the cemetery, or stories about your ancestors who are buried there, or what you think of the website, or how you think the database we’re building might be useful. Whatever. Talk to us.
